Description

This is how I made the crown.

Bullet; Yellow PVC board (3mm thick)
Bullet; Yellow EVA or craft foam (1mm and 2mm thick)
Bullet; Yellow wood glue
Bullet; Yellow sanding paper (several grains)
Bullet; Yellow red acrylic glossy paint
Bullet; Yellow glossy varnish
Bullet; Yellow red aluminium wire
Bullet; Yellow red metal chain
Bullet; Yellow 2 metal hair combs
Bullet; Yellow UHU glue, contact glue
Bullet; Yellow box cutter, hair dryer, files, pliers, staple gun

1. I traced 1/2 a paper pattern against my head and transfered it (and mirrored it) to the PVC board and then cut it with a box cutter.
2. With the help of a hairdryer (a heat gun if you own one) I bent the PVC to the desired shape and then scrached the front surface for adherence.
3. Then I layered the 2mm craft foam to give its general volume and sanded the corners until smooth and ironed to heat seal it. Gave the foam about 4 coats of woodglue (I didn't thin it as it took longer to dry). Filled any major or obvious gap with filler.
4. Traced the 1mm craft foam sheet with the basic crown shape (using the pattern I made at the beginning) and cut it with about 1,5 inch allowance. Then streched it as best I could on top of the layered foam and glued the whole surface taking special care at the edges. After the glue was nice and dry I cut the extra foam and filled the small gaps that tore in the sharpest inner corners with a bit of filler.
5. Cut the 5 stone gaps from the outer foam layer (purposedly didn't glue that area) ironed the foam to seal it and then covered it with about 6 coats of wood glue avoiding the stone gaps. Between each glue coat I sanded it smooth to remove any imperfections. Masked the stone gaps so I could glue the stones to it easier and proceeded to spray paint it.
6. Again I coated it with paint about 6 times, fine sanding in between. Repeated the process with the glossy varnish, not sanding after the last coat. After well dried I carefully removed the masks.
7. Meanwhile I made the resin jewels by making a clay positive that I polished smooth, then making a negative out of latex and finally filling it with resin to make the positive. When the stones were cured, I removed them from their mould and glued golden paper to the back. Fitted and glued the stones to the gaps in the crown and I was almost done.
8. Made two D rings out of the red wire, looped them to the ends of a section of the red metal chain and attached the rings to the holes al the ends of the crown. For stability I attached (with a staple gun, no glue really worked on the glossy surfaces) two golden metal combs to the sides, that grab the wig, and furthermore an invisible thread on top, so the crown stays in place and doesn't tip to the front.
